| The Formation of the American Society of Women Accountants... |

| In 1933, nine women CPAs met in Chicago and formed the American Women's Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA). At that time, there were 100 women CPAs, compared to 15,000 men. Five years later, in an effort to expand the opportunities in all areas of accounting for women, AWSCPA sponsored the formation of a new society. The American Society of Women Accountants began in May 1938, with three members in Indianapolis, Indiana. ASWA was formed to increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting and finance. Members include partners and staff in national, regional and local CPA firms, financial officers, controllers, academicians, financial analysts and data processing consultants, recent college graduates and women returning to the work force. The majority of our members have attained professional certifications such as CPA, CMA, CIA, CFP, and Enrolled Agents. The mission of ASWA is to enable women in all accounting and related fields to achieve their full personal, professional and economic potential and to contribute to the future development of their profession.
